This morning on my commute into work. I began to think about the current state of GI Joe and specifically the GI Joe comics.

And it hit me....we have become like the fans of Star Trek The Original Series.

Follow this analogy:

Star Trek: The Original Series - GI Joe: The Marvel run
Star Trek: The Next Generation - GI Joe: The DD run
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - GI Joe: America's Elite

You have those of us who grew up with the Marvel Series and when the DD run came out you had people complaining that it was a rehash of the Marvel run. (Same with TOS fans and TNG when it came out)

Even though some people think that TNG is superior to the TOS, TNG is still shunned in some circles. Same as the DD run compared to the Marvel run.

Now we have a new darker comic coming out in America's Elite (much like DS9) and you have fans screaming that it is not what GI Joe is supposed to be about (like Star Trek fans did when DS9 came out)

And don't even getting me started on the whole con and dressing up as your favorite character thing.

So...am I smoking crack or what?

Phil

I think it just has to do with updating properties for the times we live.

Star Trek had to updated for the 90s with TNG just as the GI Joe relaunch had to update for the new millinium. Newer technology, and odler fan base, etc...

I don't think these are the ONLY 2 properties that have done it.

But i like the analogy
