Now that I need a wrist brace from all the mouse clicking...
Those avatars are now available for use here on the board. Go into "Profile" at the bottom, click "Gallery" and look under "Cobra-Thanks to Overlord"
Enjoy.
Phil

Phew ... I'm glad IDW's Classic ARAH series has revived my interest in G.I. Joe (and I'm enjoying the main series well enough, particularly Cobra II, as a sort of "side/elseworlds" to my Joe obsession). Anyway, since my interest is more narrow these days - my toy collecting waned when the Rise of Cobra stuff replaced all the great 25th remakes - and I'm pretty much living off the comics, better late than never I remembered that I'd done quite a few more sprite avatars, but that they were over at JBL.com and had never been put up here. So allow me to quickly remedy that (I realized this when I was fishing for a different avatar to use and couldn't find one that I knew I remembered doing a while back.) The big draws were revamped, far better versions of Copperhead, Darklon and Dice - three guys I thought I could have done better on (and I found a bunch of new sprite sheet models to use as bases). So they all got better versions. The other big draw was the Night Creepers. I did every classic version of them (and intended to do the JVC style). But probably best of all, I did a bunch of Snake Eyes' - the first Joe I believe I did in the proper style. Up till then I'd done all Cobras (Storm Shadow notwithstanding). The high points I think were the recent 25th style "battle ravaged" Snake Eyes, and of course, his L.R.R.P. gear from Vietnam, which is a personal favorite, and I think is one of my personal Top 10 sprites. So many little details - the photograph of Terri stuck in his hat-band. The tiger camo. And did anyone ever notice that the original Zarana is wearing Viper pants? I've got a pretty busy plate, artistically speaking, of work to do. But I do have a bit of a renewed interest in spriting and think that in the future you guys can expect to see some new stuff. And JoeReloaded.com will be where I post it for the masses. (I grin every time I go to a comics or toys or whatever else forum and see my work has gotten fairly widespread in the online nerd community.) So just a sort of preliminary line-up for who I'm planning next: Duke, Flint, Scarlett & Roadblock. As many versions as I can, of course (including Scarlett's various international versions). Perhaps some Rise of Cobra styled versions of models I already have done (CC, Destro, SS). The rest of the Night Creeper versions. And then, I think, I'll get into the Cobra army-builders. Along the way, I think I'll probably try to redo some of the classic Cobras I've already done. Let's face it, Destro, Zartan, they're awesome and deserve remakes in different poses, even with the same costumes.

What did you base your Darklon unmasked on? That's actually pretty sensible. Is Darklonia supposed to be Liechtenstein? It's little enough to almost make sense.

Unmasked Darklon was Cable. Actually, 90% of them lately are variants of different poses of Cable from Marvel vs. Capcom. He's got a perfect "jacked, but average in size" sprite for the majority of G.I. Joe characters, which lets me use the "big guys" for special cases. It definitely feels Liechtenstein-esque, but I think its location in Eastern Europe is set in stone - it was expressly stated as being directly between President Metz/Borovia (Bosnia) and Transcarpathia (Romania) when Cobra and Destro decided to invade Borovia at the end of the Marvel run. General Liederkranz/Wolkekuckuckland seemed to border Darklonia and Transcarpathia as well ... I'd say Wolk stands in as Serbia, and Darklonia is a "Liechtenstein-esque" tiny state tucked between the borders in the mountains of those countries. (In fact, it works best to think that in the G.I. Joe Universe ... Serbia isn't Serbia at all, but rather is divided up into the various "Fictional Nations" that Larry invented.)

Is this speculated or has there been some acknowledgement from Larry on which would be which?

Pure speculation based on available evidence. Fake names but which had real world plots/scenarios/problems going on during the times Larry came up with them. Benzheen and Trucial Abysmia were stand-ins for Iraq & Kuwait. (Probably on a smaller scale.)
And similarities. Transcarpathia is mountainous, and named for the Trans-Carpathian Alps, which are a real mountain range in Romania (Destro's castle is in Dracula's neck of the woods ...). Transcarpathia borders all these other East Euro fictional Joe countries - Borovia, Darklonia, Wolkekuckuckland. Romania in real life borders some serious Eastern European 90's hot-spots like Bosnia and Serbia.
Frusenland was a tougher call. That much ice had to be Siberian. Fictional micro-sized nation north of Russia? Overt reference to Iceland? Beats me ... some are less allegorical.
Kalingaland I wasn't sure ... I thought maybe Uganda, but I'm not up on my 90's African hot-spots, and it's a really broad-strokes representation of an African monarchy in the 90's
