Looks like IDW has dedicated to use custom covers now for the Marvel reprints.
It is a cool cover but completely wrong for the book. COMPLETELY. The one pictured above is way better. Use these kind of covers for the Trades of the of IDW stuff not the Marvel Stuff. Or even the DDP stuff.
But putting DDP covers on Marvel stories, Atkins art on Marvel stories and using Campbell art are all just wrong.
Frankly, I am becoming more and more disappointed in the cover choices for any and all of the trades that IDW is putting out.
For the Marvel books they should just be using a re-edited version of one of the covers of the books within the trade. It does two things it ties the book to the actual stories it contains and it doesn't confuse the readers. (A reader picking up a trade with Atkins art on the cover will think it is a IDW story inside, if they just buy it by looking at the cover.)
Flint, Scarlett & Snake Eyes don't even appear any of those issues. And Roadblock only in #2.

I wonder why it doesn't have the CLASSIC label...

What are they thinking with these cover choices??? Maybe we should ask this at the IDW forums or the next Q&A Phil can get with Andy.

Yeah, I have to agree their cover choices continue to be wonky. I actually don’t have a real problem with them using Robert’s art for the covers. Sure, ideally I’d prefer they choose one of the original SM covers. But if the cover reflects the content of the TPB, I’m fine with it. It’s no different than marvel using Campbell, which people didn’t seem to have too big an issue with. Sure I don’t like Campbell’s style, but if the cover reflects the content, I can live with it. IDW on the other hand is misusing the Campbell art on the later TPBs since they don’t reflect the content at all. Also, from a personal taste perspective, I’d choose Robert over Campbell any day of the week.
I wonder if Robert can give us some insight into this cover. For example, did IDW tell him what the cover was for, or did they just say do us a cover with these characters? Or something else? Just curious.
So IDW steps forward by comissioning new art, but steps back again by it not reflecting the content. I mean, what's the point then? And is Volume 1 getting an Atkins cover or the one that showed up on Amazon? Nothing against Robert, but I love the use of the Issue 2 cover on the Vol 1 TPB. Either way IDW continues their weirdness on the Joe TPBs.

Alright, I started a thread over at IDW. Let's speak up over there. Cause frankly, I hate this current choice of cover for the trade. http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopi ... 312#174312Oh and I asked this question in the Q&A Andy Schmidt does here (although I can't determine from which actually session it was from cause there isn't a date) Quote: 6. What is the reasoning behind using the DDP era covers for the Marvel trade paperbacks (Vol. 6)?
We like them!

I also wonder when or whether we will ever get HOT POTATO and BEST DEFENSE (the Special Mission from Marvel 50) collected in a TPB!

We like them! I remember that answer to that question. I wasn't sure if he was trying to be funny, was annoyed by the question or just that's the only answer he had. Either way it wasn't much of an answer. I was hoping for something more... insightful. Perhapss he'll give more on the IDW boards.

Last he commented on hot potato, I believe he said he was trying to figure out how to fit it in. I also wonder what's happening with the yearbooks.

I would love to see them in the final Classics volume to give that trade some extra thickness. I do not want the #155 1/2 issue or other issues from that Larry Hama continuation used. Those are going to be too new to be considered "Classic" in my book. Toss in those Yearbook stories and that would give us a full trade around the same size as the others. Yeah, those Yearbook tales will be out of order, but looking at volume 7 in the bookstore and that missing Special Mission issue? I do not think IDW cares about putting too much effort into them other then getting them released. The reason I say this is the remastering they are using isn't the best in my opinion. Even my friend saw it on Classics volume 6 and I did not think he would. That's just my 2 cents.

I agree that Hot Potato and Best Defense really Need to be reprinted in one of these volumes!
Also, I like the Atkins covers. I like getting something new for my money. Yes, recoloring is great! I will not deny that. With the IDW trades of the IDW series, we get cover galleries and some comcept art, I am a huge fan of that. Since we can't get that with Marvel repirnts, I will take new covers.

I spoke with Robert Atkins at C2E2 in Chicago, over the weekend. He said that when he did the cover for vol 1, he did not even know what it was for! They just asked for a cover with 4 prominent characters. It was done and he was working on the vol 2 cover before he knew what it was for.
